You just can’t pin Ether Ashe down.
For more than a decade the Tarheel native - who grew up listening to Motown, funk, rock, classical, country, bluegrass and anything else that was available - has drifted around the United States and Europe, playing random gigs as a bassman in jazz, pop, rock and country combos. All the while, he’s been composing his own stuff, and it’s all over the place.
Sometimes his musical roots are exposed, gnarled, solid. Other times it’s hard to tell where he’s coming from, or where he’ll end up. It’s the way Ashe lives: always attentive to the past, but not sure where he’ll be tomorrow. Such a life is precarious at best, but it guarantees that the creative drive is moving along with him, perpetually working on the next thing coming.
