The wild potato lives many places in Central and South America, but particularly in the Andes Mountains. Some related cultivated species date back hundreds of years.
Various forms of papas nativa survive in conditions that would befuddle other crops. The Quechua people in Peru ate potatoes centuries before they were “discovered” and brought to Europe.
Now the challenge is to preserve the biodiversity of this important set of plants. Here’s an interesting article about it:
