Will O'Winsbury ( Fairport mix)

It was 50 years ago that I first went to a folk club. It was the Bridgend Folk Club in South Wales hosted by the magnificent Ivor Davies. I was a 16 year old cockey youth who because of my looks could pass for older so warm ale was no stranger to my lips. It was here that I first came across traditional British music in its various forms. It was 1970 and I was into more modern stuff. Tim Buckley, Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell amongst the many. Despite my musical tastes it was here that I started my love of Traditional music. The better examples of the genre have left us with some of the finest music and performances. So to hear Javolenus’ rendition of the classic Willy O Winsbury was a real joy. Over the years I have heard this sung all over the world but this version with its masterful phrasing is one of the best. I could not resist giving it some of the Fairport Convention treatment but despite my add ons it is a serious tour de force for Javolenus.
