I shaved my whiskers,
tied my tie,
wore my best suit—
better than I remember ever buying [myself]—
aftershave,
clean socks,
a flower in my hand.
But I forgot the pennies….

Boatman, the fare?
Two pence.
I hadn’t got it.
Left it on the washstand
with my wallet,
wedding ring,
my favorite watch.
Why did I think to wear a tie?
